Imagine having the power to create digital landscapes from invisible laser beams. Sounds futuristic, right? Well, that’s exactly what I got to do during my internship at PT Karvak Nusa Geomatika in July–August 2019. Working with LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data, I helped transform raw aerial scans into high-precision geospatial models for mining, plantations, and urban areas.
🚀 The Mission: Turning LiDAR Data into Digital Maps
At PT Karvak Nusa Geomatika, I worked on processing LiDAR datasets to generate valuable geospatial products. Here’s what that involved:
✅ Digital Elevation Models (DEM) – Creating 3D terrain models that reveal elevation changes, perfect for mining operations and flood analysis.
✅ Contour Mapping – Extracting contour lines to help engineers and urban planners understand land topography.
✅ Orthophoto Preparation – Assisting in aligning LiDAR data with high-resolution aerial images to produce accurate, real-world maps.
🛠️ Tools of the Trade
This internship gave me hands-on experience with remote sensing, GIS, and LiDAR processing techniques. I worked with industry-standard tools like:
📌 LAStools – For filtering and processing massive LiDAR point clouds.
📌 Global Mapper – To visualize and manipulate LiDAR-derived elevation data.📌 ArcGIS/QGIS – For geospatial analysis and mapping.
